Horizons does not receive funding from government, local authority or Local Education Authorities.
We rely entirely upon public generosity and grants from charitable trusts.
The constant struggle to secure adequate funding to provide our full range of activities necessitates a wide and varied range of fund raising initiatives.
Monetary Donations
Personal donations, whether one-off or regular payments, (if paid by a UK taxpayer) mean we are able to claim under “Gift Aid”. The portion of tax paid on your donation, currently 24p in every £1.
One-off payments can be used for general costs or for specific events and projects. Target funding allows us to apply for match funding from various grant providers. We always have future plans, therefore please speak to any of the staff or trustees as we may be able to suggest a project you may wish to be actively involved in.
Regular payments (normally by Standing Order) are very useful to ensure continuity of funding. This allows us to project for future schemes, training and events to enhance the services we provide. Ultimately we would prefer this type of funding as it allows long term planning. Once again we are able to claim under “Gift Aid” for your portion of tax paid on your donation.
Unrestricted or restricted donation funding
Unrestricted funding allows us to be flexible in the work we do at Horizons. Unrestricted funding is used for repair and maintenance, wages, fuel for safety boats and a myriad of other costs that crop up sometimes unexpectedly. Restricted funding is for named projects or expenses such as new boats, training funds, capital builds etc. Restricted funds normally come from grant applications for specific uses. These funds can also be from donations to assist or participate in a specific project.
Sponsorship Scheme and Bursaries
This is designed for long term relationships, normally but not exclusively with companies and corporate bodies where a monthly or regular payment is pledged for an agreed period of time in support of the work at Horizons. Sponsors are acknowledged with publicity and events promoting the sponsors involvement with Horizons throughout their “term".
Donations of Equipment, Time and Expertise
Donations of equipment no longer required, that can forward the work of Horizons, or specialist skills (accounting – advertising-printing etc.) or anything that will ultimately save the Trust time or money will be very gratefully received. Please do phone if you have something to offer, because if we cannot use it ourselves we may be able to offer it to other charities or schools that we are working alongside.

Miscellaneous
Scrap for Sailing
Scrap precious metals, brass, copper, bronze, also lead, etc all has a resale value and a good price if in an economic quantity. If you are having a new central heating system or copper immersion boiler – let us take advantage of the copper value not your plumber! Many donations of a handful or bagful will soon fill the trailer, and a trailer’s worth will certainly help with the running of Horizons. If you think you may have something of use please contact Craig.

Money/Collection Boxes
We have collection boxes and posters that are available to be placed in prominent places to raise funds. If you know of a place that does not already have a charity box and is willing to take one of ours please contact Craig.
100 Club Lottery
Monthly 100 numbers draw, each number costs £1.00; 50% of money collected goes to Horizons and 50% goes is distributed as prizes. Contact Horizons for more information and to join.
Talks and Visits
We also raise funds by having a team of people that are willing to give talks and presentations to groups and companies raising the profile of the work of Horizons. If you have an organisation, or company that you feel may wish to become involved either financially or be able to give assistance and you are prepared to give us an introduction please do ring Jon or Craig to discuss the possibilities of the team giving a talk.
Supporting our schools
If you shop at superstores that give vouchers for schools sports equipment/computers etc and you are not already doing so can you please collect these and let Horizons have them. We can then pass them onto the schools whose children we take sailing.
Media events
We have a Press Officer that deals with all outside promotions and he would love to hear from anyone working for Horizons benefit that might have an idea or event that could do with little help to promote through the media.
If you already use the internet for work or pleasure, whether searching for items or buying and selling online you can raise funds without it costing you anything.
Searching Online
If you replace your regular web search engine with everyclick.com (uses the Ask search engine) or easysearch.org.uk (uses the Yahoo search engine) both these sites reward charities every time you search or access a site using this engine. Once you have registered and selected Horizons, the more you and everyone else uses them the more funds we get. The good thing is you retain your favourites and if you prefer to use another search engine. then you can always make that a favourite, and make it your first click – we still gain. Please take a look and help by clicking on behalf of Horizons (Plymouth).
Buying Online
Either of these charity shopping web portals:
easyfundraising.org.uk
and buy.at/horizonsplymouth
will allow you to access your favourite shopping websites; the bonus being that after you have registered and selected Horizons (Plymouth) we will get a % donation of what you have spent. This is a FREE service; the prices you pay are the same as if you had gone to the site directly. This website just records your charity preference and then lets you click onto the home website of the shopping site you want. Tesco’s Direct and Amazon to name a few of the links. Easyfundraising.org.uk requires you to login therefore needs setting up but has a lot lot more shops on offer. However the buy.at/horizonsplymouth site has some different shops. Please take a look, shop and fund-raise at the same time on behalf of Horizons (Plymouth)
Finally, you can ‘adopt’ a boat, sailing session or other feature.
Go to ‘Adopt-a-Boat’ to find out how!
