Horizons Children’s Sailing Charity

School's Out!

Club Sailing

Every Thursday and Saturday during the sailing season (normally Easter to October ½ term) we hold sailing sessions, giving keen young cadets a chance to learn to sail in Plymouth sound.

We primarily use Pico and Hawk sailing boats supported by R.I.B. inflatables for coaching and, if need be, rescue. Initially children will learn the basics in a Hawk 20 with up to six other cadets and a qualified instructor and then move on to Pico dinghies either paired up with another cadet or on their own.

Sailing is always subject to suitable weather conditions, i.e. wind, tide and temperature, which will be matched to skill level and general ability so that the cadets are always sailing within their capability.

These sailing sessions are aimed at building skills to meet the RYA training awards and there is every expectation that 'regular' cadets will win the awards.

'xcuse me mister, how much is one of them?

Costs

There is a minimum donation for the sailing, currently just £1,
but please feel free to donate more if you wish

It is felt that a small fee encourages children to realise that there is a cost to all activities and so take ownership and feel they are part of the organisation, not just visiting. We do not rigidly enforce this, as some on many occasions can't afford to pay, they fill in the attendance diary and put their money in the pot but nobody is there checking.

School Holidays Sailing Courses

During the school holidays we run weekly RYA sail training courses, using our fleet of dinghies and keelboats.

The courses cover the RYA dinghy sailing scheme, from absolute beginners all the way up to the more advanced techniques and Assistant Instructor awards.

These courses can support and extend the qualifications earned on the Thursday and Saturday sessions.
