Activities for people with
physical and mental disabilities

Using the Mitchell 31, a purpose-built power boat named Friendship of Plymouth, and our three Hawk 20’s (self-righting unsinkable sailing keel boat) we offer a facility that enables handicapped people to gain access to the water and if able, to helm and crew both craft.

The  Mitchell 31 work boat has been built with a specific provision for people with profound physical disabilities. This enables us to secure up to 5 wheelchairs on deck including one at the steering position!

Wheelchairs are embarked via a removable access door and loading ramp.

They are then secured to the deck with straps attached to fittings built into the deck.

Wheelchairs can also be secured in the boats steering position which allows the occupant to take control of the vessel.

If the wheel is too much to handle a ‘joystick’ is also fitted for their use!

Care & Safety

As a foundation centre for RYA Sailability our staff have been trained in safe teaching practices for students with disabilities.

Mayflower International Marina has full disabled facilities, wide pontoons and ramps for easy wheelchair access and manoeuvrability.

Our new bespoke Mitchell 31 has been designed to match all students’ abilities. Operating procedures and training structures are in place to ensure not only personal care of students but also of their carers.
