Many children come from backgrounds that are unimaginable to people reading this website. Some come from broken homes, poverty, drugs and crime, others from families hit by recession and redundancy. It is the volunteers and staff at Horizons that connect with these children and for some it is first time that anyone has trusted them, listened to them and enabled them to feel relaxed enough for the real child to shine through.

As well as the children enjoying themselves, the volunteers do too.
Besides enjoying Plymouth Sound, it is the sense of achievement from seeing the children change into young adults which is thoroughly rewarding.

The volunteers and staff play a pivotal role in this, often becoming role-models for the children, something that teachers at school have a hard job in doing these days.

Do you think you have it? Would you like to be a volunteer? Horizons is always looking for willing volunteers to help with pretty much anything and everything. You don’t have to be able to sail to volunteer, we can take care of that! All that is needed are bags of enthusiasm.

Horizons is a great place to meet and make new friends that all have interests in the sea and sailing. What would you be doing right now? Watching TV? Surfing the internet? Looking for something to do? Then why not get out there and make a difference, learn a new sport and something about yourself that you thought you never had.

At Horizons we realise that work is an issue this is why we have two sailing sessions; one during the week on Thursday evenings and the other on Saturday mornings.
