Accessible Sailing

Available to local young people, many of whom live near the water, but owing to financial and social disadvantage have no access to it. We offer two weekly sessions, Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings, using a full range of sailing boats such as Picos (beginners single and double hander), Vagos (advanced trainer) and our two Hawk 20 keelboats.

This programme was developed from our daily school boating trips. It was soon recognised that there was a need for an out-of-schools activity that was a little bit different from the norm, and run with a youth club attitude. Over the years it has developed into the Thursday evening and Saturday morning sailing club.

The emphasis is on having safe fun on the water with a little development training as required thrown in. The young people are encouraged to self-manage their sailing, choose their own boats, who to sail with and where they are sailing, all under the guidance of an RYA Senior Instructor.

Clothing & Equipment

We provide all the sailing equipment that a young sailor would need, windproof/waterproof clothing, buoyancy aid, wetsuit (if required) and footwear.

We regularly receive donations of sailing clothing that are no longer required by supporters. This we pass on to the children and many are now building a useful kitbag of sailing equipment that they can keep, maintain and look after.

The children on the right are just completing a practice capsize and recovery, and are dressed appropriately in wetsuits and buoyancy aids.
